Jennifer Random Transcendent closed the book and laid it on her night table.
“I never get tired of reading it. I always cry just a little bit at the end.”
She stroked Gad on her wings, and the beetle hummed in return.
“And you got to actually help them out,” the beetle said in her high thin voice.
Jennifer blushed. “Well I always got so nervous with them at the gate to the Night Land. They get out fine, of course, but I had to make sure. And to meet them all in person--it was so worth the trouble.”
“I’m glad I got to meet Jeanette. She was so brave.”
“Yes she was.”
She turned out the light and pulled the covers over her , but for a moment lay there in the dark, looking up.
